"IT DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING: FLAG BEARER AND TREND SETTER FOR CORPORATE BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLANNING?”
Moderated by: Paul Penny, CTO & Exec. Solution Architect, Strategic Technologies
Panelists: Todd Graham, Dir. Telecommunications, ScanSource, Inc.
  Ed Greco, IT Manager, SCANA
Discussion: Many IT Organizations have taken the initiative around Disaster Recovery planning for IT assets and services. DR planning is considered an important element of a much larger Business Continuity planning effort undertaken to protect the enterprise at large. But is it really being driven as a top-down approach from executive levels or are CIO’s and other IT decision makers actually raising corporate awareness and fostering more prudent corporate governance through the DR planning process?
This presentation will offer DR/BC planning frameworks and approaches, present case studies from IT practitioners on the planning and executing of their DR strategies, and encourage a discussion on the effect or role of IT DR planning on overall corporate BC planning.

Jim Schafer, Information Services Director, Lexington County
Ray Smith, HRIS Manager, Santee Cooper
Discussion: Chief Information Officers are receiving a constant barrage of requests for correlating and sharing the data CIO’s support on behalf of their business clients. In another pile, often from the same business clients, is a stack of laws, policies, and requests to ensure the security and privacy of the data the business clients want to share. This open discussion will share experiences on balancing these two critical business needs.

“MANAGING DATA LEAVING YOUR COMPANY – PDA’S, LAPTOPS, ETC.”
Moderated by: Phil Yanov, Executive Director, GSATC – IT Leadership Council
Panelists: Richard Alexander, VP IS, Michelin, NA
Richard Nelson, Director, Information Technology Services, The Citadel
  Dan Lamorte, CIO, Kemet
Mark Funderburk, CISSP, Director, Project Information Management, Fluor Government Group
Discussion: The personal details of nearly 4,000 people were on two laptops stolen from a third-party contractor working for... YOUR COMPANY. This is the lead for a story that no CIO wants to read about themselves. The problem is tricky. We've built a system of mobile workers. We have data flying across borders. All of our key and confidential data can now fit on a device that's probably smaller than they key to their car. How do we stem the tide? How do we put policies in place? What measures must we take to reduce our risks and prepare for the inevitable data theft? Please join our panel as we consider together how we meet the challenge of preventing data loss and misdirection in a mobile society.

“WHY IT PROJECTS FAIL”
Moderated by: Dan Furlong, Project Management Officer, Medical University of SC
Panelists: Marvin Reem, Director, Information Technologies, Bob Jones University
Karen Patten,Instructor-IT Management, USC and Former Sr. Manager, Emerging Technologies, AT&T Bell Laboratories
  Martha Bode, IT Director, SCANA
Discussion: Why do IT projects fail? On the surface there appears to be little rhyme or reason to why IT projects fail, but when you drill down the reasons for failure are generally attributable to just a few root causes. If it truly comes down to just a few reasons, why do we insist on repeating these mistakes? Is it possible that the causes are not correctable, or do we simply tend to be overly optimistic and ignore the risk? Come take part in a panel discussion where we will visit IT project failure from both sides of the aisle.

Panelists: Doran Dunaway, CIO, Greenville Hospital System
Dr. Bill Hogue, CIO, University of South Carolina
Neil Owens, CTO, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System

If so, what is it, what does it do, how much did it cost, and what value does it provide.
  • What innovative process have you implemented that provides value to IT and/or your organization?
  • For the hospital panelists, do you use a Personal Health Record (PHR)? If so, who is it and how does it work? Any thoughts about Microsoft entering the picture with their HealthVault? www.healthvault.com

"GOVERNANCE – WHO’S DRIVING THE TRAIN?"
Moderated by: Mark Hess, President, Weston Technology Management Group
Panelists: Jim Bryant, CIO, State of South Carolina
  Randy Senn, CIO, SCANA
Khushru Tata, CIO, SC Technical College System
Discussion: IT Governance is a perennial issue for CIOs. Who “owns” IT resources (e.g., hardware and software), functions (e.g., application development or service delivery) and skills? Sharing responsibilities for IT raises the need for an IT governance model. This session will describe how senior CIOs of large, complex organizations determine who is responsible for what and how IT decisions will be made.

Key issues include:
  • What issues are driving the need for IT governance today?
  • How do large IT organizations successfully develop their IT governance models?
  • How should CIOs determine who will be responsible for what?
