“DEFININING IT GOVERNANCE RISK & COMPLIANCE”
Moderated by: Eric Offenberg, Worldwide Product Marketing, Optim, IBM
Panelist:  Phil Murphy, Principal Analyst, Forrester Research
Discussion: IT governance, IT risk management and IT compliance are three distinct disciplines which, in the past, have existed in silos within organizations. Today, many organizations no longer see these activities as individual, one-time projects handled in separate parts of the IT organization. Rather, they are finding that there are a lot of commonalities and interrelationships that exist between these three areas. In this session we will explore recommended best practices for adopting a unified IT governance, risk management, and compliance (IT GRC) approach and managing the associated activities coherently to create efficiencies, provide a holistic view of the IT environment, and ensure accountability within your organization.

LUNCHEON KEYNOTE – “GROOMING THE NEXT CIO”
Presented by: Darwin John, Former CIO, Scott Paper, LDS Church, FBI
Discussion: Will speak to the realities of today and the requirements of the role of CIO going forward which will be both more complex and require more leadership capability. Beyond that he will speak to the "call to action" for those of us in the field, if we are to be responsive. This call to action will be about leadership that can deliver the basics of IT in a flawless manner. It is about earning ones way into the inner circle of leadership of the enterprise with earned trust, respect and credibility. It is about leading change in ones self and others. Therefore, what must we do or do differently. This will include proactive approaches to the transformation required between where we are and where we must be. Finally, will be a period of dialog with the attendees to explore, challenge, probe and test concepts presented.

Moderated by: Doug Hubbard, President, Hubbard Decision Research
Panelists:  Sam Ferguson, Director IT, Village of Schaumburg
Wayne Smith, CEO, iTest Quality Partners
Mark Griesbaum, CIO, Cardean Learning Group
Larry Gunderson, IT Department Team Leader, City of Naperville
Discussion: Doug Hubbard, the Author of “How to Measure Anything”, will facilitate this panel to discuss a topic that should be critical to the value of IT in any organization. Business Intelligence could be the single most important impact IT has on the health and growth of the business, yet it may be one of the least measured aspects of any IT department. The panel will discuss:
  • How does Business Intelligence affect the organization in ways that matter?
  • What is the value of Business Intelligence and can it be computed?
  • Once Business Intelligence is measured, how can it be improved further?

Panelists: Jay Kurtzman, Sr. VP & CTO, Equity Residential
Bob Runcie, CIO, Chicago Public Schools
Ellen Barry, CIO, Metropolitan Pier & Exposition Authority
Wayne Smith, CEO, iTest Quality Partners
Discussion: Quality of staff is the number one ingredient in doing quality work. The best way to hire quality staff is to have high standards and to make hiring staff one of the most important aspects of every manager’s position. It should not be delegated to persons who do not know how to do it. Once hired, the very best persons need to be motivated to perform at their very best. This is done by giving them challenging assignments, not micromanaging them, and holding them accountable for results. Highest rewards should be given to the very best performers.

“STRATEGIC BUSINESS VIRTUALIZATION – CREATING AN ADAPTIVE ENTERPRISE”
Presented by: Jack Wilson, Enterprise Architect, Asst. Vice President, Amerisure Mutual Insurance Company
Discussion: Virtualization is more than just a concept limited to hardware or software. It is a concept of removing all physical barriers to conducting business. Great strides have been made in terms of virtualizing servers and workstations and this has been a very important development. The question now becomes how wide and deep can we extend the concept of virtualization within an organization and how can it provide a competitive business advantage. Amerisure will be considered as a case study as a company that made the metamorphosis from a typical complex, inflexible, physically limiting infrastructure to a streamlined, flexible and agile virtual infrastructure. We'll consider the phases and reach of the virtualization of the workstations, servers, mobile notebooks, softphones and information assets (documents, video, audio). This is reality not just theory and we’ll discuss lessons learned and suggestions for making this critical transition in any organization.

Our intent is to investigate with panelists a number of different questions: What does personal leadership style mean to you today? How has the experience of gaining that leadership perspective translated into the way you execute your corporate role today? What is it about the process of "getting there" that suprised you the most? What would your peers and subordinates say is different about your leadership practices today? How do you view the differences between leadership and management?

“ACHIEVING A PROJECT MANAGEMENT CULTURE: GOALS, ISSUES, HURDLES & ENABLERS”
Moderated by: Joseph F. Norton, Former VP Corporate Technology, JPMorgan Bank; Former CTO, McDonald’s Corporation; Lecturer in Technology Industry Management, Northwestern University; Kellogg School of Management
Panelists: Maurice L. Woods, Deputy CIO, Chicago Public Schools
Lori Nordstrom, Asst. Vice President, Project Management Office, Trustmark Insurance Company
Steve Kopplin, Director, Integrated Supply Chain IT, Motorola
Business Problem: Industry research and news continues to tell us how hard it is to deliver information technology projects which are deemed successful. Firms which achieve a deliverables-driven project management culture lead the way in delivering successful IT projects.
IT Solution: The solution is a top down active management approach that makes it “safe” to practice professional project management. Project Management performance is considered by those firms that consistently delivery great IT results to be the cornerstone of successful IT project execution. Even though project management – the second oldest profession - is well documented as to its “body of knowledge" and best practices, and is also supported by professional societies and certification programs of international scope, achieving a project management culture is extremely difficult for many organizations. A panel of Chicagoland executives will share with you their experiences and what they learned in dealing with the project management challenge in their organizations, and how it changed their organization’s IT results. They will frame the value proposition of effective professional project management, as well as the issues, challenges and hurdles all organizations face in attempting to practice “safe project management”. And of course, they will let you in on how their organizations made this happen.
